As a boy growing up in Devon in the early 1970’s I never realised how lucky I was coming from a Spiritualist back ground, my Grandfather Arthur Roberts who was the most gentle and thoughtful person that I have ever been lucky enough to know was a Trance Healer and at a very young age of maybe 4 or 5 I can remember him going into trance and giving my grandmother healing, his Indian guide Whitefeather would come through and talk of love and healing. My Grandparents would sit in circle with my God parents every other Thursday alternating between their houses in Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren, I never knew at the time but my God Father Ken Day was a Trance Medium, thirty odd years later Ken was to appear to me as a transfigured face and gave me undeniable proof of his survival but that’s another story! When I was staying at my Grandparents house I would often see my Grandfather sat in the kitchen listening to classical music and reading the bible and other such books. I once asked him what he was doing and he simply replied ‘feeding the soul’ Of course I had no idea what he was talking about!
Sadly my Grandfather took his own life in 1987 but the mantle was then passed on to my mother Judy Greenwood. Mum was already a Spiritualist and had great knowledge but it was different to my Grandfathers, I remember her mentioning Doris Stokes many times. My Parents then took over the running of Newton Abbot Spiritualist Church where my Step Father Bob became an SNU trained Healer and my mother would work the platform. Mum’s passion was philosophy, she believed that the church was open to help those that needed and that the mediums of tomorrow should learn about the Philosophy. My Step Father at the time read all of the Silver Birch books. By this time I was a rebellious young man and wanted nothing to do with my weird families beliefs! My mother though at the time ran a Philosophy circle and it always seemed to be full. My parents gave up the running of the church in 1996 after my sister passed to spirit but their belief in the philosophy of Spiritualism is as strong today as it was then. I also find it truely amazing that three generations of Spiritualist can almost have different beliefs all united by knowing that life is eternal.
I came back into the movement in 2004 when at the age of 36 life had taken a turn for the worst and I needed answers, by this time the church was being run by Phil & Shelia Scott who had a passion for sitting in the power, philosophy and physical mediumship. On my journey to the platform for both clairvoyance and trance I was lucky enough to sit with many of the world’s top physical mediums and was taught about the spirit world, the energy, why are we here? What is the point of living and more importantly what is the point of dyeing? Phil & Shelia themselves are wonderful physical mediums and over the years we have sat on many occasions and again I have been lucky enough to see many wonderful things and heard the philosophy of those in Spirit on many occasions.
This leads me to 2018 and what I see as a change in mediumship and style, there is no doubt that social media and other such vehicles have brought our movement into the main stream, it is now more exceptable where as even 20 years ago it was still frown upon. Every man and their dogs are now ‘mediums’ and in my opinion the standard of mediumship has dropped, the churches are no longer the only place to see a medium as you can go to a centre, a pub or a community centre. Everyone is now teaching mediumship and the worrying thing is that people who are not mediums and have no knowledge of where our great movement comes from are teaching mediumship, I know of someone teaching Trance workshops that have never sat in trance! I was recently in a Spiritualist Church taking a Sunday service and my reading came from the Maurice Barbanell book ‘This is Spiritualism’ afterwards I was asked by a young medium who was Maurice Barbanell and why should he read Silverbirch! My reply was would you ever take your car to someone who wasn’t a mechanic? Of course not he replied, so my next question was why should someone come to you if you know nothing about Spiritualism?
It is my firm belief that sitting in the power and learning not only about the philosophy of spiritualism but also the philosophy of life from as many different races, religions and points of view as possible will deepened our own mediumship and therefore improve the experience for the person receiving the message. Whether we like it or not mediumship is all about the sitter, the person receiving the message as without them there would be no need for a medium or a spirit connection and therefore it is our responsibility to continue our own learning and development to enable us to help where we are needed. Mediumship is about bringing comfort to the sitter to bring hope that their loved one are still alive and that they will see them again and to help them on their pathway to healing, we should never forget that. Our seven principles brought through the trance mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten teaches us about personal responsibility, so wherever or whoever has started to teach us it our responsibility to learn about the mechanics of mediumship to be able to help those that need it.
Last year I was lucky enough to sit at a lunch table with Gordon Smith and Billy Cook, it was clear how much they knew about Spiritualism as they discussed in depth about Helen Duncan and The Fox Sisters and how they still sit in the power every day where possible, of course three different people coming from three very different back grounds with have different views on the same subject but that is what makes our movement fantastic as every conversation leads to an opportunity to grow and learn to deepen our own mediumship and to increase our own philosophy to be able to pass it on to the next generation of mediums. I have been lucky enough to see Gordon and Billy work on several occasions and have been even luckier to share the platform with Billy. Their mediumship is constantly excellent and as mediums we must aspire to be the best we can, not the best medium but the best medium that we can be. Theses two pioneers of modern day mediumship are clearly still learning, growing and improving.
The past is gone, we cannot change it, Emanuel Swedenborg, Lesley Flint, Gordon Higginson even Colin Fry & Glynn Edwards have had their time and of course have sadly passed but it is my opinion that we need to be learning from these greats, listening to their wisdom and philosophy not so that we can live in the past but so that we can as a movement move forward, learn our own philosophy, continue to build the foundation of our own mediumship to give the best evidence and message that we possibly can and then pass on that wonderful knowledge and truth to tomorrows mediums.
The Soul After Life.
Life is eternal and the energy that is our spirit and soul lives on after the transition that we call death but where does the soul go after passing? I was recently doing a clairvoyance demonstration in Torquay and when there a gentleman who was new to this way of life and exploring his own belief approached me and ask ‘what is your god?’ My reply was that God is an energy that flows through all life whether that is Human, animal, plant or mineral, it is always expanding and does not discriminate between man or woman, gay or straight, Christian or Muslim. His reply was that he was that was a scientist and he knew full well that energy cannot die and so if the soul does exist then it must go somewhere as it will never die. He hadn’t made up his mind completely but he was leaning towards life after death.
As the evening came to finish I felt drawn to give the gentleman a message from his father, after the evening he said that he couldn’t take everything that I said but it had made him think. The following day I received a phone call to say that the information that he couldn’t take had come true in a photograph that he had seen while at his mothers. This happens quite often as the best information a medium can give is the information that needs to be looked into.
So we have established that the soul is pure energy but where does it go? My belief is that we are here on this earth for soul growth and to learn lessons so that we can develop to a point where we can join with that great energy called god. It is also my belief that we reincarnate several times so as to experience life from different perspectives, who knows in my next life I could be as a woman! When we pass over to the higher life we are meet by souls that we know and recognise on an energy level, this would be souls that we are comfortable with and could be loved ones, friends, guides and helpers. It is my belief that we all have guides and helpers and even if we don’t recognise them in this life then we would in the next. We are then taken to a place where we are looked after and nursed back to health, taught how to live, interact and reintegrate into our new surroundings. There is no time in the next life and they do not need sleep so the healing process is a lot quicker than it would be over here plus of course there is no NHS which means no waiting, the love and help that we need is there. What will hold the healing process back is our own beliefs and willingness to learn. When we pass over to the other side we initially keep our personalities so if we are stubborn in this life then we will be in the next one! At least for a while! In time though this will change and eventually as become accustomed to our new surroundings so will our appearance as we will revert back to a time where we were at our happiest. For the medium though they always appear as they were at the end of death as this is usually how they are recognised by the person receiving the message.
I am often asked how long will it take for a soul to come back through a medium and the answer is that there really is no time limit. I recently gave a message to a lady who’s mother had passed during the church service just an hour or so after they had seen each other but also I have given messages from loved ones who were coming through for the first time 20 years or more after they had passed to the higher life. The next life like this one is another learning area and so our loved ones have to learn how to communicate through a medium. There are other reasons that may affect communication, these could be that the soul and the medium do not connect on an energy level or even that the soul does not like or trust the medium that’s giving the information. The one thing I am certain of is that love is eternal and just because they have not communicated with you through a medium it does not mean that they love you any less or have forgotten about you. Often they are with us without even realising that they are there.
My Journey To Mediumship.
As a young boy of maybe 5 or 6, I remember my Grandfather going into Trance and giving my Grandmother healing. His guide White Feather would often come and speak, this was to my annoyance as it always happened at a time when I was watching my favourite programme! My Grandfather was an old school Christian Spiritualist who would put on relaxing music and would read the bible. Every Thursday my God Parents and sometimes my mother would come around to visit, little did I know at the time that they were holding séances! My Godfather Ken was a Trance medium. I admit I know little about what happened within their circle but 30 odd years later Ken appeared to me transfigured on the face of a medium and gave me information that only my mother could know due to her sitting in the circle at that time.
My Grandfather sadly took his own life in 1987 and I then went through a period of a few years where most people close to me passed to the spirit world, my Grandmother, sister and 2 children plus a couple of friends. My Mother who is mental medium by this time had taken over Newton Abbot Spiritualist and I was a rather angry young man who by this time and in my early 20’s wanted nothing to do with Spiritualism and anyone that was involved in it. Things tended to stay with me though, I could forecast football results, knew instantly when people had passed, would often see people who had passed at the end of my bed. Always trying to ignore it but always slightly intrigued.
This continued until 2004 when by this time and now being 36 I was being pulled back to Newton Abbot Spiritualist Church which was now being run by Phil & Shelia Scott. Being Stubborn I refused to go and although I had recently bought a book on Psychic development there was no way I was ever going to read it. I then went on a national trust holiday in Snowdonia not realising that it was the week that would change my life. Most evenings we would walk down a little pub in Bethgellert but on this occasion I was the only one that didn’t drink, we returned to where were staying and everyone went to bed except for me. It was such a warm beautiful night that I sat outside, the stars were so close that I could touch them! And then stood right in front of me appeared my 2 sisters who were in spirit, Caron who has passed 8 years earlier kept repeating about a book and then they were gone! Must admit I thought it was a crazy dream until a few days later when home. I got up in the morning and sat on the sofa eating my breakfast when on the floor and facing me was the book on Psychic development, today this day I don’t remember if I had left it there but right next to it and also facing me was a book on how to set my video recorder. To this day I can still remember putting it in a place when there was no earthly way it could have been moved! That was it, the next Wednesday I was off to Newton Church for the demonstration of Clairvoyance.
I quickly joined the awareness circle but after a few short months I sat in Phil’s development circle and there I stayed for 10 years, purely based on Meditation. Sitting in the energy and blending with the spirit, developing an unbreakable bond with my guides and helpers and never practicing Clairvoyance until one day I after about 5 or 6 years I was thrust onto the platform. My first demonstration was the most daunting of my life but it went ok and quickly I was asked to work in the locally churches around South Devon, it was at this point that I started to get an interest in Trance and Physical Mediumship.
We were very lucky at Newton Abbot and had some wonderful Physical mediums work at our church, Stuart Alexander, David Thompson, Kai Muegge amonst others. Phil Scott is also a physical medium and on one occasion I was lucky enough to see my 2 daughters transfigured on his shoulders, the information given was so accurate it left me extremely humbled especially as no one in the church knew that I had lost children and the date of the séance was the 1 November, the anniversary of my first daughters passing! In another séance I saw Gordon Higginson walk out the cabinet as fully materialised Spirit Person and talked to Brenda Sawyer who was sat next to me about times they had spent together at Macclesfield Church in the 70’s or 80’s. I have also been lucky enough to have a 2 way conversation with my Grandmother via direct voice.
It was around this time when I first went into Trance, sitting in my mothers house my Grandfathers guides came through and spoke. I knew nothing of it until an hour and a half later when I came back around. The next time I was in Trance was at The Arthur Findlay College with the wonderful Glyn Edwards who sadly passed to the higher life last year.
So here I am a full time medium, demonstrating Mental Mediumship and Trance Mediumship plus doing workshops in the churches and centres throughout the South of England and Wales. I meet some incredible people while doing the job that I love, there are still times when I’m amazed by the strength and courage that some people show plus also the healing power of the Spirit World. We all come from the same source that divine power of unconditional love that I call God, we are all special, we are all little miracles and in our own way we are all mediums. Our loved ones in Spirit are always just a mere thought away.
Time and The World Of Spirit.
I remember as a child growing up in Liverton on the edge of Dartmoor, the long summer days always seemed to be sunny back then. We would start our summer holidays full of excitement as to what we would do and by the end of the six weeks of holidays we were ready to go back to school as we were starting to get a little bored. One such day when time seemed to stand still my mother said to me ‘enjoy these days because as you get older time gets quicker! I didn’t really understand it back then but now and at the grand old age of 48 I know exactly what she means, time does appear to be speeding up! Even on days when I have complete rest, literally do nothing the times rushes by! But why?
The truth is that from a physical point of view I don’t know, I suspect that these days we are consumed by technology always looking at the internet on our phones, checking to see who has done what and that time isn’t actually speeding up but our perception of time is changing.
We do know however that in the spirit world there is no time, 20 of our years pass in the blink of an eye over there. When demonstrating platform mediumship my awareness moves and with this so does my perception of time. I always like to have a clock in sight purely to ensure that I’m not spending too much time on one message. This might sound a little harsh as the whole point of mediumship is for people to receive healing and so how can you measure that in minutes and seconds. The truth is you can’t and so the message has to be about quality and not the length of it. There are only so many messages we can deliver so Spirit have ways of splitting the message so that more than just the receiver can take what the medium is saying.
Trance Mediumship for me is interesting because 2 hours in that state can feel 5 minutes and yet while I am in that state I can feel the essence of the communicator, hearing their thoughts quite often aware of things within the physical environment and yet unable to remember anything about the communicator or the session upon my return. My grandfather who was a Trance Healer felt he never fully let go, my interpretation is that it is actually a way for spirit to keep you safe from harm enabling us to return back to the here and now should we need to do so.
I was told by a little whirlwind that came into my life recently and sadly left just as quickly that I needed to live for the moment and whilst I agree I also feel it is good to keep one eye on future because as we know time waits for no man or woman.
I hope the second half of 2016 brings you peace, joy and happiness.
Recently whenever I start a Clairvoyance demonstration I ask the question ‘who is psychic?’ out of an audience that can sometimes reach 100 people there are usually 2 or 3 hands go up most just look as if you say ‘not me’.
Well the news is that everyone on this planet is psychic! Have you ever thought of someone that you haven’t seen for a long time and then bump into them a few days later or you suddenly have a feeling of unrest and someone that can be a little draining calls you, well that is your psychic awareness.
Mediumship and spirit communication is adding the extra layers to it. In essence you can psychic without being spiritual but you cannot be spiritual without being psychic. Even the spiritual medium will at times drop into the psychic levels when giving a message from the platform, spirit will use all tools available to them to be able give a meaningful message.
Mediumship comes naturally to certain people and others have to work at it and at times throughout our lives our mediumship either gets stronger or we think we are going backwards.
The reality is that during periods of perceived stagnation that is normally the time when things are moving forward the most. It is a very slow and subtle process of unfoldment. I sat in the same meditation circle for 10 years, some people go on different courses with different mediums hoping that will push them further forward faster however we will develop as fast or as slow as spirit think is good enough for us.
Matthew Smith who is a tutor at The Arthur Findlay College says that it should take at least 3 years of development before someone goes on the platform and gives messages. This I completely agree, I am astonished how quickly some fledgling mediums are put on the platform without knowing any of the philosophy of how it works or even how to deliver a message. Mediumship isn’t about the medium or even the spirit communicator it’s about the person receiving the message and can we as mediums make them feel better and begin the healing process. We are key that unlocks the door for healing, nothing more.
So for your own mediumship journey, experience new things, push your boundaries, step out of your comfort zone learn from the likes of Silver Birch, White Eagle or any other Spiritual leader from any religion that you are drawn to, expand your awareness and if your sat in a development circle make sure that you are developing in a way that correct for you because it’s feels right and not because its driven by ego.
God bless and good luck on your Spiritual Journey.
First day of spring, let my new life begin,
lets clear out the old, come on be bold,
as i look to the future, my heart starts to beat,
of long summer nights and finally some heat,
lets live our lives, this is our chance,
live for the moment, laugh, sing and dance,
If money is tight, then dont have a fright,
because a dip in the sea is stunning and free,
tune into mother nature as she whispers, I hear,
when she says life is beautiful, i love you my dear,
so my friends this is our time not to be glum,
Lets live our lives for fun, fun, fun.
My sister Caron passed to spirit on 26th February 1996 at just 20 years old, she had had a difficult few years but just as she had started to turn her life around she was taken from us. As a celebration of her life I would like to post a poem written by her in her darkest hour. Thank you for reading.
Soul Searching by Caron Lucy Greenwood.
As I watch the stars that shine,
I wonder what is truly mine,
For when it is my time to go,
I’ll only have myself to show,
No fancy items will impress,
Just the soul that I possess,
My inner self is all they see,
What has transformed, what’s made me, me,
And as I wonder through the days,
Some so clear, and some in haze,
I realise to feel at ease,
You have to find a way to please,
Your mind, your body and your soul,
You need contentment and a goal,
So you can pass yourself and say,
I feel so good, I achieved this day.
Blending With The Power
'Positive thinking creates a doorway through which Angels love to walk'
So what is the power? How does it help? And where does it come from? The power is the beautiful energy that comes directly from the God force it’s self. God to me is a beautiful universal energy that flows through everything, man, animal, plant and mineral life, it does not discriminate between colour, creed or sexuality, it is pure unconditional love and it’s what links us on the earth to the spirit realms.
The power or energy allows those from the world of spirit to visit and commune with us, it’s how mediumship works, by allowing us to raise our energy levels to a point where the spirit can meet us in the middle. The power is much more than an aid to communication, it will deepen ones healing capabilities or can just help with our own intuition. This beautiful energy is there to help and inspire us 24/7. There is an abundant supply it never goes away. It is very subtle, the best way I can describe it is imagine a butterfly floating by on a hot summers day, it is that light! It has to be because the spirit has no weight, size or shape, it is energy in its purest form.
Mediumship is very similar and to develop all you have to do is to blend with the power whenever possible. Like the energy mediumistic development is a very slow subtle process, you are always expanding, always developing but you will never be the finished product because we will continue to develop in this life and the next.
Sit in a quiet place and put some relaxing music on, close your eyes and try to imagine the stresses and strains of the day slowly melting away. Imagine a white light coming from the universe and entering the top of your head, slowly moving through your body and encompassing your mind your heart and soul (don’t worry if your heart briefly starts to beats quicker its normal), the energy slowly flows down to your knees, your feet and into the ground, as it flows it removes any negative energy leaving just positive energy. Now with every breath imagine the energy expanding, getting deeper and bigger until eventually it not only comes out of your body and fills the room but it encompasses the whole world and just sit in that energy for 10 minutes or so.
Try that exercise over a period of time and see the difference, yes it is a slow process, yes you need dedication and discipline, yes it can be really boring!! But the beauty and the power of the spirit is unimaginable only limited by us and our human mind so it is worth it.
2016 – A New Hope.
‘Do not dwell on the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment’ – Buddha.
Wise words indeed as we enter the start of a new year, we all tend to have our resolutions in place and are ready and optimistic for what the forth coming days will bring. We almost have a sence than on New Year’s Day a miracle will happen and everything will change for the best. But why wait for the New Year? Every day the sun rises and with it brings new opportunity, it doesn’t matter whether it’s January 1st or August 16th, the new beginnings are there for us.
The Spiritualist National Union has its 7 principles and Number 5 is personal responsibility. Responsibility for our lives the good things that happen and also the bad, sadly no matter how much we love somebody especially those who are going through difficult times we cannot take responsibility for them or their actions we can only offer support and love.
The Spirit World in their wisdom tell us that we are on this earthly world for soul growth and that the way to expand our consciousness is through living life, both the good times and the bad, making the most of every day and enjoying life and the challenges that it presents us. Rather than making New Year resolutions that we probably won’t keep lets live life as Buddha suggests ‘in the moment’ making the most of every day so that as it comes to a close we can look back and say ‘it was a good day, I did my best’. Remember the bank account of time, we can only take from that bank account, we cannot put back in, we cannot relive a day or even a moment, when it’s gone, it’s gone. So enjoy the moment for all it brings and live life to the full, our loved ones in the Spirit World would ask nothing less.
Happy New to you all, I hope it is a year filled with fun, good health and laughter.
Love & Peace
For a man to admit that we are vulnerable and delicate can be a difficult thing, men don’t like to show their feelings and so this blog comes with a little trepidation.
For 28 years I have had a cycle of binge eating when I am on my own and eating a balanced and healthy diet when I was in a relationship. This would lead to massive weight gains when I was alone and massive weight loss when I was in a relationship. For years this had made my life miserable and I was getting to the point where I was thinking that life wasn’t worth living so out of desperation I contacted a very good friend of mine Becky Willoughby. Becky is a medium but also a hypnotherapist and an NLP coach. I explained the situation and went to see her. I spent all afternoon and to my surprise my binge eating was down to the suicide of my Grandfather. He was a Trance Healer and also the kindest and most genuine man I have ever meet and his passing left me devastated. All these years and I had never let him go. During the session I saw myself and him together, I hugged him and let him walk into the light at this point there were a few tears.
The following few days I felt fantastic on the inside and rubbish on the outside but I knew that I was clearing stuff so it wasn’t a problem. However then mentally I began to drop becoming severally stressed, focusing on the negatives in my life and dropping into depression like a stone. People could see it in my eyes and were asking if I was ok to which I would reply ‘yeap fine, just a little tired’. Of course male ego wouldn’t allow me to say ‘actually I feel like shit and need a bloody hug! But then I would feel bad I had beaten the eating disorder but in turn taken away my security blanket.
There are positives though it doesn’t matter how bad I feel, how much my head feels like its been squeezed in a vice my mediumship seems to be coming deeper, clearer and hopefully more meaningful and healing for the people that need it. I can feel inside that things are changing and I'm actually starting to like myself. I feel like the stress will be around for a bit longer as I haven’t completely learnt the lesson that i need to. Each day I thank the experience for its teaching but I also look forward to the day it goes.
A primrose is a delicate and beautiful flower but its also a deep yellow colour, within that depth is strength. If you stand on it it bounces back. When as Winston Churchill calls depression ‘the black dog’ comes to see you keep on fighting for who you are and what you believe in because light will always overcome darkness and when you eventually win, it will leave you stronger, more balanced and more able to live life to the full.
Finally getting back to Becky, she told me off and told me to go back and see her which I will do. After one session with her I let go off something that I had held onto for nearly 30 years, she truly is good at what she does.
Born in 1967 I come from a heredity line of mediums going back three generations, I have been lucky enough to see visitors from the spirit realms since the age of 3.
